There were some areas or some some critical times when things could have gone differently, but the elders caved in essence to Bill Hybels. Basically, theyre a rubber stamp. But what happens when there is a sheep within the flock who needs to be defended? And its pervasive, and people are, theyre using it. So disappointed in ECFA. Judson is located just 36 miles outside Chicago on a beautiful 90 acre campus. And it turns out there were a lot more women who had been affected by Bill Hybels. So there were more than 10 women that came forward and said that there was sexual misconduct by Bill Hybels. I was blown away. Yep, thats rooted in pride. And if you think its not, you know, go and look in your church building right now, if youre quarantined under COVID, or youre not gathering. It is not a program is not a set of services. I appreciate you so much and look forward to visiting with you again soon. And youre in the process right now of looking for a senior pastor. For the next 90 minutes, Pete Briscoe enraptured us with his presentation of The Bema.. I mean, I cant tell you how many stories I heard just like the one that you told the people who said, Well, I was at a conference with Bill Hybels, and he was awful to me. It should be something that he learned from, right? It grows on the vanilla orchid, and it only grows in really exotic places like Tahiti, and there are some places in Mexico it grows too, but what is unique about the vanilla orchid is when it blooms, its got to be pollinated within one day. He was running and we were praying that he would surrender fully to God. So grateful for those who did and Scot McKnight who came out with a just a powerful, I remember when his blog hit and he said, Every elder has to resign. And within what, wasnt it a week, all of them resigned. So if you think of Willow as being a living thing, we are willing to put other things to death on the altar of preserving that organism. The woman had come forwarded, but then later recanted her story. This was an excellent interview and elders need to read this interview. And what lessons can we learn from Willow Creeks mistakes? This is just the way things are in Corinth. And I really was hopeful that there was going to be a public apology, and yet, None. Powerful ministry at some points. Well, I want to turn our discussion to what youve experienced at your own church, which is a multi-site mega church there in the Dallas Fort Worth area, because those are things where youve been able to apply some of these lessons that youve learned from watching the negative example maybe of Willow Creek, youve learned an awful lot from going through crisis at your own church. I think thats dangerous. In context, I think my meaning becomes clear as I say soon after, agreeing with Mitchs assessment that unanimity is bad: Absolutely horrible. But essentially, it was the board being asked to deal with matters of policy and then all matters of implementation really get left to the vocational staff in the church. If anything has a whiff of impropriety, we would jump on it immediately. Can I talk about Scot McKnight for a second? Briscoe John and Nancy Ortberg had been at Willow Creek as pastors. And which really makes me sad because theyve had a change in leadership. Stuart Briscoe died on August 3 "of natural causes unexpectedly" according to a tweet from his son, Pete Briscoe. I mean, that is just huge. For that we are forever grateful. Great question. The Elder Board has accepted Petes decision, and his resignation is effective March 31, 2019. These are people that may be in the cubicle next to you at work, who have an acuity for blending in to normal life. And you you actually refer to it as multi-level marketing. They didnt have the ability to respond to new issues as they arose. So when you have someone who is trusted, whos supposed to be an expert, you know, like a pastor, like a longtime senior pastor whos supposed to be a theological expert, and someone whos in authority like a senior pastor, people are willing to do things to satisfy that person that they would not otherwise do, even if those things seem harmful to another person. And not elevated above it. Is that right? These are people that are in your country club. Mitch is an attorney, a church elder and an advocate for abuse victims. These little bitty people, from Willows perspective, who helped win the PR back, its a miracle. I think its Pat Baranowskis story that ran in the New York Times that actually caused that. Bent Tree is a multi site mega church in the Dallas Fort Worth area thats had its own share of crises over the past several years. We are egalitarian and sophisticated, and we are Gods chosen church to show how ministry is supposed to be done. That way, youll never miss an episode. I was blown away. And someone Im extremely glad is serving in church leadership. Like if you go back and you actually read his books line-on-line, there are some things in there in those books where you go, For a pastor, that should be unacceptable. But he was attenuating his church culture and culture at large to him in his behavior. And I had a wonderful experience. Okay. Explain that. Its one of the beauties and the deformities of social media is social media is agile. You can choose from more than 60 majors and learn in a Christian environment known for its spiritual values, leadership opportunities, and strong financial aid. Churches sometimes need advocates outside their system. I think it took courage. Volunteers monitored the process in real time, turning over cassettes at the appropriate time to record on the second side. Basically, theyre a rubber stamp., Julie, I have a different take on what happened at WCC. Theyre involved in their own issue right now. "For many of you, he was preacher, pastor, mentor or friend. So glad to see you feature Mitch Little. But they spoke. He was like one of these, I think until Scot decided to speak up, it was, Willow had credulity to say, These are people outside our tribe who are criticizing us. If you have six members of the Board of eight, lets just say its eight or 10. I would love to see Chicago experience revival. Today, Telling the Truthis heard anytime and anywhere, thanks to international radio programming, the internet, and our mobile app. And that was how Bill deformed his accountability structure. And I think Christian leaders need to start stepping up. Lets say you have you have six or eight members who are saying, Guys, we need to fire this person. And basically, my understanding is his cavalier attitude was, Well, Ill just pick up and Ill open a new church down the street [if] you dont you dont like me the way I am.. And theres an element to which a church like Willow Creek was a global church, right? And that set the course for some of these more severe things to continue happening, and then to even get more and more severe. So thank you. Okay, how it didnt bring accountability. Hes also the chairman of the elder board at a multisite megachurch in Dallas, Texas. Its so HARD today to know who to donate to. What I do, you know, and what Ministry Watch is doing and what all these independent bloggers are doing, that its bringing accountability. Jill and Stuart came to the States from England. But then its my understanding too, that when these women met with the elders, the level of bullying and abuse that they were subjected to, was such that I know Vonda told me there were elders in tears at the end of this, of how pervasive the abuse was, I dont know how specific you can be but can you give people an idea of, of what actually happened to these women that were abused? Senior pastors dont need advocates. You know, Willow creeks pastors family members benefit from the Penumbra of Willow Creek and its just sheer size within evangelicalism. It was the summer of 2000, and I was a college student on staff at Pine Cove Christian Camp. And I saw this at Harvest Bible chapel when I was doing reporting there. Or what is the church think about Calvinism? something along those lines. You have to have unity among your vocational staff at the church about, you know, key issues like how do we treat other people? Although theres been some. I mean, its an accurate criticism of people within the church. So Mitch, thank you so much for taking the time to join me today. Because they, I mean, they had a massive PR machine they had, they hired Mark DeMoss, his firm to come in and try to resolve things from a PR standpoint. Thats not to say there arent authentic people there. Its good to be visiting with you again. I mean, there were some things that you learned specifically, that were done to potentially cover wrongdoing by Bill Hybels. Happened so often, I quit altogether. And you made the statement that if you have the character to lead, you dont need a manual. They were almost sacred and benevolent and unable to do wrong. But it was after a period of I dont know the details, and I dont know how much youre at liberty to say them, but its my understanding he went away for a period of time to kind of reflect and assess how he was doing and how he was handling things. So I want you to think about this while you know Bill Hybels is being accused of doing awful things by a dozen women. It started as a simple tape duplication ministry in a home basement, using a reel-to-reel tape recorder linked to a dozen smaller recorders to duplicate the Briscoes' teaching. Heres to better days and better church health. I mean, you dont need to be trying to fit a round peg into a square hole, because it is gonna manifest itself in bad ways. And then everyone could say, Oh, how sad that that one person did that one thing. Pete is the son of Jill and Stuart Briscoe. Thats a bad default state. And so when I looked at that in the context of James MacDonald going, you know what, thats the type of accountability that man needed and was denied. Funny, whenever I would watch Bill Hybels preach online or speak at the GLS, and he would go into that quavering voice, tears-in-his-eyes, emotional mode, Id stop listening. They made a lot of friends a lot of money over the years selling books, promoting programs, platforming them at conferences, platforming them at the Global Leadership Summit. You have your identity rooted in something other than Christ, the centrality of Christ. Please know you are not alone. Dear anonymous. And yet, they lost the PR battle, which is unbelievable. I hope someday I can overcome this cynicism because I need Church as it should be. Im still waiting for the apology for the public apology for giving. And so when you see behaviors that look like grooming, you know, John Calvin, Im not a Calvinist. But lets talk about since were talking about the media, Willow Creek had unbelievable resources at its disposal, right. But he had the emotional and spiritual fortitude to say, You know what? Yes, I would view it far differently today. How do you recommend searching worth while places to donate too? WebBriscoe says that he wants Bent Tree to be a place where people can agree to disagree over this issue. I know from hearing from men, that that Bill abused men emotionally, spiritually while they were working there. Theres, theres an advocacy piece to lawyering that needs to be there a little bit, but it doesnt need to be pervasive. And I think it wasnt a problem, Mitch, because everybody always agreed with whatever the senior pastor wanted. And I feel that way with these pastors. I mean, I Timothy 5:20 says that we should publicly expose elders who are sinning so that others may take warning. Petes leadership at Bent Tree casts a long shadow with a legacy that will endure.
